Computing for All

Project Period: 15.5.2016 – 15.06.2017

PROJECT BRIEF:
We were able to help Turkish speaking community gaining computing, digital photography and electronic communication skills who are living in and surrounding boroughs of Hackney.

Lessons were designed to teach computing via desk tops, tablets and smart phones. We also included digital photography and other communication applications.

IT lesson topics covered: Keyboard and mouse skills, Word, Internet, e-mail and Facebook, free telephone call applications, Google map, City Mappers and translation applications, watch YouTube to learn how to do things and food recipes / handcrafts. Learners were taught writing letters on Word; after learning about concept of computing, key board and mouse skills, browsing on the web via Google search for public, council and other services, local activities, reading books, newspapers, do online shopping. Learners were also helped opening their email account for the first time, communicating through e-mail by sending and receiving e mails, and attaching photos from internet during our courses. They were also helped joining to social networks such as Facebook again after opening their account.

Basic Photography Course: Learners was taught about cameras, parts of cameras, taking photos, transferring pictures to computers, saving and sending photos by e-mail and uploading to Facebook. We used 3 digital cameras during the course and some people brought their own cameras. 

Courses Programs were:

  • 14 session in total; twice per week.
  • 11 lessons of computing,
  • 2 lessons of digital photography,
  • 1 lesson of free communication applications e.g. Skype, WhatsApp, Facetime, Facebook calling. Each learner will benefit of 42 hours of teaching.

Project Timeline: The course was repeated 3 times during the project.

Course Period:

  • 13 September – 27 October 2016
  • 1 November – 15 December 2016
  • 14 February – 30 March 2017 

Learners gained necessary communication skills and increased confidence in using modern technology; modern social networking options. They connected with their family and friends in the UK and abroad and reduced generation gap as well as reducing isolation and contributing towards independent living. Learners enjoyed having free access to use internet provision as so many people didn’t have internet in their houses.
