Turkish Cypriots In London: Our Story – Heritage Project

15 June 2022 – 13 May 2023

The project aims to analyse, catalogue, and digitise TCCA’s archival material and showcase representative items through art installation and exhibitions at various locations. This project will be carried out with many collaborative work and networking with different organisations, council and supplementary schools. It will last a year with various types of work such as reading archives, digitising, running courses, planting, installing, competition, photographing, exhibiting and celebrating.

The project includes the following activities:

      • Archiving documents: Comb through archives, catalogue the files, scan necessary items for digitisation, properly box documents for archive and select representative ones to be used in exhibition.

      • Design a new website and upload all past and future activities for easy accessibility and sustainability. We will purchase a domain and web hosting to facilitate this and prepare content to make useful information accessible by the public. We will also upload upcoming events, projects and workshops in advance for wider publicity and to increase awareness what’s happening and attendance.

        • Hold a creative writing contest with which we hope to create an intergenerational bridge between 1st-generation service users and a younger demographic and exhibit the entries in our art exhibitions.

Involve the community in our project, both the current and past service users.

          • Photograph exhibition, Sift through local photographers’ personal archives to select material related to the activities of TCCA and the Turkish speaking community. Curated material will be exhibited.

            • Deliver a series of art and heritage workshops. One of them is a workshop on silk cocoon art, which is a Northern Cyprus specialty. Learners will learn how to design, how to cut silk cocoons to make their own brooches and framed art displays.

              • Community Celebration Day This event will commemorate the 45th anniversary of Alone and we will exhibit project findings, winning entries of our “Intergenerational Short Story Writing Contest,” and examples from the “Silk Cocoon Art Workshops.”

In short, the aim of this project is to make TCCA visible and relevant beyond the Turkish Cypriot community and share its historical commitment to the lives of its community to with a wider public.
