The coordinator, Gülnur Salih designed the gardening space in front of the building in order to plant flowers and make the centre more enjoyable place to come, occupied by members with gardening sessions. It was designed for a raised flower bedding area so elderly members do not need to bend down while gardening as most of them are elderly.
We found bricklayer, carpenter and tiler as we needed bricklayer to make the wall, carpenter to install a fence at the entrance and tiler to tile the floor area.
We initially contracted a bricklayer, bought bricks and other materials and they were delivered to our centre. The next day the work is carried out and marked area was walled to create the planting area.
The wooden fence was installed at the entrance and the floor laid with tiles.
When all the preparation was over we bought 2 tonnes of mixed soil and compost it was delivered to our centre with a crane. We filled the space with this special soil mix. We then researched and visited few garden centres to buy suitable plants for our limited space. Flowers and plants were bought in small sizes to make sure they would not over grow. Hydrangea, magnolia and azalea are the small trees. Yearly flowering varieties were planted by choosing variety of colours to cheer the area up such as red tulips, hyacinth, daffodils, and cyclamen, lily in red, yellow and orange colours, yellow daisy. Members were involved in planting, watering and weeding to keep the garden clean and looking tidy. People look at our flowers when passing by and this also gives us a pleasure.
